EPL: Southampton vs Manchester United Preview

Manchester United head to Southampton on Sunday as Ronald Koeman and Louis van Gaal resume old acquaintances.

United have the unenviable record of not keeping a clean sheet in any of their last seven league games against Saints.

The visitors will be reeling from their midweek loss to PSV Eindhoven, and more importantly from the loss of former Southampton man Luke Shaw to a serious injury that has seen him undergo two surgeries.

Koeman’s side have just one win so far, lost once and other games ending in draws.

With Rooney fit again, and Martial hoping to start for United, LVG will be hoping that his men start to fire on all cylinders.

All four of the league meetings between Ronald Koeman and Louis van Gaal have ended as away wins (2006-07 PSV v AZ in Eredivisie and 2014-15 Southampton v Man Utd).

Ronald Koeman replaced Louis van Gaal as manager of AZ in 2009 after the latter moved to Bayern Munich, but was replaced himself after losing seven of his first 16 games in charge.

Southampton have been solid at home; winning five and losing just one of their last seven PL games at St Mary’s Stadium.

However, Southampton have won just two of their last 11 Premier League matches (W2 D4 L5).

Manchester United have won just seven of their 21 Premier League away matches under Louis van Gaal (W7 D8 L6).

When Southampton have conceded first against Manchester United in the Premier League they have go on to lose all but one of those matches (D1 L15).
