La Liga result  – Real fall at The Mestalla despite Ronaldo’s header

Valencia 2 – 1 Real Madrid

Real Madrid suffered just their second La Liga loss of the season and missed the chance to go four points clear at the top of La Liga after a 2 – 1 loss at the Mestalla on Wednesday night.

Former West Ham striker Simone Zaza opened the scoring for the hosts with a spectacular strike and Fabian Orellana doubled the lead within nine minutes, before Cristiano Ronaldo pulled a goal back.

Ronaldo marked his 700th club appearance with a powerful header on the stroke of half-time but Real could not force an equaliser despite late pressure.
The result means Zinedine Zidane’s side remain one point clear of second-place Barcelona having played a game less.

Meanwhile, Valencia’s second straight win eases their relegation worries, moving them 10 points clear of the drop zone.
Real Madrid have conceded two goals in the first 10 minutes of a La Liga game for the first time since 2003 vs Sevilla.

Most headed goals in Europe’s top 5 leagues in the last 10 seasons:

CRISTIANO RONALDO 51

Fernando Llorente 49

Aritz Aduriz 41
