Freiburg defeated Schalke 2-0 with both goals coming from Florian Niederlechner, with his first arriving on 22 minutes, before slotting home a 31st minute penalty.
The victors moved up from eighth to fifth, on 47 points, with Schalke remaining in 10th, with 41 points.

Hamburg made the brighter start of the two sides in the first of just two Bundesliga games on Sunday.

But it was the visitors who went close to opening the scoring on just seven minutes as Jhon Cordoba drew a fine save from Christian Mathenia before the Mainz keeper got to the rebound just ahead of Yoshinori Muto.

There was little in the way of goalmouth action through much of the rest of the first half, with Lewis Holtby doing his best to keep Hamburg ticking over.

The hosts were denied a penalty on 39 minutes as Aron Hunt went down easily in the box before Mathenia expertly denied Cordoba at the other end, as he powered in a stunning drive.

Both sides ultimately had to settle for a point, leaving Hamburg in 16th on 34 points and Mainz in 15th, also on 34 points.
