Guardiola on Aguero: “he ll die scoring”

Sergio Aguero is on the verge of becoming Manchester City’s top goalscorer and Pep Guardiola joked the striker will “die scoring goals.”

The Argentina international is just one goal from equalling the 78-year record of Eric Brook, who scored 177 goals for City in the 1930s.

“He has to be proud and City has to be proud,” said Guardiola. “Being a long time in one place and breaking the record is so fantastic. I’ll try to help him score more goals. The record is going to be broken. Where? I don’t know. Maybe at home would be better.

“He has the character to score goals,” Guardiola said. “He had it in the past with Argentina, his mother and father gave him that talent. He will die scoring goals; there is no doubt about that.”

Pep Guardiola hails ‘legend’ Sergio Aguero as he edge closer to club’s all-time goalscoring record

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola praised “legend” Sergio Aguero, after the striker moved two goals away from equalling the club’s all-time record.

The Argentina forward scored his sixth Premier League hat-trick as City beat Watford 6-0 on Saturday.

The 29-year-old has 175 goals since joining City in 2011, with Eric Brook holding the club record of 177 goals.

“Hopefully that [the record] will happen very soon, and we can have a big celebration,” said Guardiola.

Ex-England winger Brook, who was at City from 1928-1940, scored his goals in 494 appearances.

Aguero has scored his in 259 games.

Guardiola added: “He’s a legend, and it’s a part of history in the club. Aguero’s numbers speak for themselves – he is amazing.”

Aguero’s hat-trick at Vicarage Road put him on 127 Premier League goals, moving him above Robbie Keane and Nicolas Anelka and level with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink on the competition’s all-time list.

He has scored five goals in five games this season.

Former England striker and record Premier League goalscorer Alan Shearer (260 in 441 appearances) challenged Aguero to get 30 league goals this season.

Aguero has scored 20-plus goals in four of the past six seasons, 26 being his highest tally in the 2014-15 campaign.

Ex-Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was the latest player to score 30, in the 2013-14 season.

Tottenham striker Harry Kane was the Premier League’s top scorer in the past two seasons with 29 and 25 goals.

“Watford could not get near Aguero,” said Shearer on Match of the Day.

“It was a top performance. For a centre-forward to play in this City team must be an absolute dream, with the chances created and the pace going forward.
“I think you are looking for Aguero to get 30 league goals this year.”

Former England defender Phil Neville added: “Aguero does two things really well. When he goes short, he takes a defender into an area he’s not comfortable with.
“But when he runs in behind it’s very difficult because he’s so small with a low centre of gravity.”

Aguero’s EPL goalscoring stat

  • Six Premier League hat-tricks, only Alan Shearer (11), Robbie Fowler (9), Michael Owen and Thierry Henry (8) have more.
  • 12th on all-time Premier League goalscorers list, with Robin van Persie 11th on 144 goals and Teddy Sheringham 10th on 146
  • Most Premier League goals by a non-European player
  • Scored 20 Premier League goals in four of past six seasons

Pep Guardiola confirms striker Kelechi Iheanacho transfer to Leicester is close, reveals buy-back clause

Manchester  City boss Pep Guardiola has confirmed Kelechi Iheanacho is finalising a transfer to Leicester City.

The striker has stayed behind in the UK and not travelled with the City squad for their pre-season tour in the US as a move to Leicester edges ever closer.

Wilfried Bony, who spent last season at Stoke, also looks to be on his way out, but Guardiola insists the only reason he is absent from City’s American tour is due to injury.

While also admitting City have placed a buyback clause in Iheanacho’s proposed transfer.

“It was/is an honour to work with him because it was not easy for him because I did not give him a little opportunities,” Guardiola said of Iheanacho. “His behaviour, I’ve never saw a guy like him (before).

“He is close to making a deal, a transfer and he decided to stay in Manchester. Maybe next week or the next 10 days he is going to finish.

“We have an option to have the opportunity in a few years to bring him back.

“But he’s a young player and we believe he deserves to play. He needs to play at that age and that’s why him, the club and everybody, we decide what’s best for him.

“Bony is injured. If he wasn’t injured, he would be here but he had a little problem. It’s nothing important and serious, but he is recovering in Manchester.”

Dani Alves set for talks with Manchester City

Dani Alves is ready to hold talks with Manchester City and Chelsea after reportedly coming to an arrangement with Juventus on his contract.

Alves is understood to be close to agreeing a £100,000-a-week contract with Pep Guardiola’s side.
The Brazilian full-back signed a two-year deal, with an option to extend with Juve last summer after leaving Barcelona, but the 34-year-old has managed to terminate his deal in Turin.
According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, claims Alves has “asked to resign his contract” and will soon be free to negotiate a move away from Serie A with Man City and Chelsea both keen on his services.

Alves’ agent had a meeting with Juventus on Monday and made the club aware of his client’s desire to leave after just 12 months in Turin.

The defender is believed to be keen to link up again Pep Guardiola, who managed him at Barcelona – a coach he has claimed is a “genuis”.

“If you turn the word ‘computer’ backwards, it spells ‘Steve Jobs’. If you turn the word ‘football’ backwards, it spells ‘Pep’,” Alves wrote for the Players’ Tribune website ahead of the Champions league final last month. “He is a genius. I’ll say it again. A genius.”
Man City were reported to be preparing a £5million bid for Alves, but now the player will move on a free transfer after Juve and Alves came to an agreement on his remaining 12 months.

It is not clear whether Alves had to buyout his Juventus contract, but he will likely demand a big signing on fee from his new suitors, which will likely negate any fee he stumped up to Juve.

Dani Alves respond to rumours of his exit to Manchester City

Dani Alves has hit out at claims that he is on the verge of leaving Juventus.
It was reported that Manchester City are closing in on the signing of the Juventus’ 34-year-old Brazil right-back.
The experienced defender won Serie A and the Coppa Italia, as well as reaching the Champions League final, in his first season at Juve since completing a free transfer from Barcelona last year.
The Brazil international wrote: “Don’t spread sh*t, [Higuain] sent a video for me in a television programme. Don’t do your job badly, please.”
Alves has 12 months left on his contract in Italy.

Manchester City confirms Guardiola as their next coach

Pep Guardiola will succeed Manuel Pellegrini as Manchester City manager next season on a three-year contract, the club have announced.
The club’s surprise statement ends considerable speculation linking them with outgoing Bayern Munich boss Guardiola and over Pellegrini’s future.

An official club statement read: “Manchester City can confirm that in recent weeks it has commenced and finalised contractual negotiations with Pep Guardiola to become MCFC head coach for the 2016/17 EPL season onwards.
“The contract is for three years. These negotiations were a re-commencement of discussions that were curtailed in 2012.
“Out of respect for Manuel Pellegrini and the players, the club wishes to make its decision public to remove the unnecessary burden of speculation.
“Manuel, who is fully supportive of the decision to make this communication, is entirely focused on achieving his targets for the season ahead and retains the respect and commitment of all involved with the leadership of the club.”
The news was announced at the end of a standard press conference to preview Tuesday’s Barclays Premier League game at Sunderland.
First Pellegrini, who signed a one-year extension to his original three-year contract last summer, announced his departure and that was quickly followed by the club statement.
Pellegrini said: “Before we finish I will tell you that I talked with the club and I will finish my contract on the original date in June. We extended the contract one year more but with the clause that one of the club or me may not use that extended contract. So, I will finish here on the original date, June 30.
“There has been a lot of speculation about things, but they (the club) are not doing anything behind me. I knew this one month ago. I don’t think it is good to have speculation about different things. I prefer to finish (by announcing) today – that is why I have told the press and told the players. I told the club two weeks ago that I would do it.”
Chilean Pellegrini, 62, succeeded Roberto Mancini as City boss in 2013 and guided them the Premier League and Capital One Cup success in his first season.
They failed to defend their title last season but remain alive in four competitions this term.
One interesting aspect of City’s statement is the admission that the talks with Guardiola began in 2012 – at a time when City had secured the Premier League title under Mancini on a dramatic final day of the season.
It was in the summer of 2012 that Guardiola opted to take a sabbatical from coaching before joining Bayern in time for the start of the 2013-14 season.
Guardiola announced just before Christmas that he would leave Bayern at the end of the season, with the German giants simultaneously confirming that former Chelsea and Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti would succeed him.
City had always been perceived as favourites to win the race for his signature, with City football director Txiki Begiristain and chief executive Ferran Soriano having worked with Guardiola at Barcelona.
But Chelsea – who sacked Jose Mourinho in December after a dreadful start to their title defence – had also been linked with Guardiola along with Manchester United, whose manager Louis van Gaal is under pressure after some mediocre performances this term.
