Manchester United striker Anthony Martial has been named the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month for August/September in the Premier League.

Martial, who joined United on Deadline Day from Monaco for £36m – a record fee for a teenager – scored three goals in his first two Premier League games, as well as putting in a man-of-the-match performance in the 3-0 win over Sunderland.

The 19-year-old’s performances led Manchester United back to the top of the Premier League for the first time in over two years at the end of September.

Martial saw off competition from in-form midfielders Riyad Mahrez and Dimitri Payet to claim the award.

The initial list included Bafetimbi Gomis (Swansea City), Odion Ighalo (Watford), Vincent Kompany (Manchester City), Graziano Pelle (Southampton), David Silva (Manchester City), Jamie Vardy (Leicester City), Callum Wilson (Bournemouth) and Ashley Williams (Swansea).

Leicester’s Mahrez provided two assists in his side’s 3-2 win over Aston Villa – after they had trailed 2-0 with 20 minutes remaining – before scoring in the Foxes’ 2-2 draw at Stoke the following week.

West Ham’s Payet scored twice in West Ham’s win over Newcastle at the start of September, and added assists in each of his next two appearances against Manchester City and Norwich City.

Jamie Redknapp believes Anthony Martial is the best 19-year-old he’s seen since Lionel Messi broke onto the scene over 10 years ago.
